Eclipse Day at the Googleplex is a half day event for developers to learn about different Eclipse projects and related technologies. Eclipse and OMG are jointly organising two one-day symposia to promote and build on the partnership between Eclipse's open source software and OMG's open standards - one as part of EclipseCon 2008 in Santa Clara, the other during the OMG Technical Meeting in Ottawa. Each symposium will be organised as a series of discussion sessions on corresponding OMG standards and Eclipse projects. In each case the purpose will be to discuss the alignment between current standard and implemented software, and identify areas where the cooperation could be further improved in future.

The EclipseCon 2008 technical program has been selected and is now available on the conference web site. Thank you to everyone who submitted a proposal to the program committee. The number and quality of submissions received was tremendous so the program committee had a difficult time selecting the sessions, but it has made the final program exceptionally strong.
The Eclipse Foundation has launched a new system to allow individuals to make a financial donation to the Eclipse Foundation. The donations will be used to help fund the operations of the Eclipse community, such as extra hardware for open source projects, increase bandwidth and sponsorship of Eclipse community events.
The Eclipse Foundation and IDC have released the results of a comprehensive survey of the Eclipse Community conducted during the summer of 2007.
The Eclipse Foundation today announced the creation of a new open-source project called Hibachi. The Hibachi project provides an industrial-strength, vendor-neutral Ada integrated development environment (IDE) that also serves as a platform for other contributors to provide value-added functionality for Ada developers. Hibachi is a sub-project of the Eclipse Tools Project, and it parallels and complements CDT, the C/C++ Development Tooling project, providing a multi-language native embedded software development environment. The name Hibachi is an anagram honoring the late Jean Ichbiah, lead designer of the Ada language.
The keynote speakers for EclipseCon 2008 will feature well known industry speakers including Cory Doctorow, science fiction author and open source advocate; Dan Lyons, also known as the Fake Steve Jobs; and Sam Ramji, Director at Microsoft Open Source Labs.

The Eclipse Foundation is hosting its Eclipse Summit Europe conference for the European community again this year. The second annual Eclipse Summit Europe (ESE) takes place on October 9-11, 2007 at Forum am Schlosspark in Ludwigsburg, which is in the Stuttgart region of Germany. The goal of the conference is to give the European Eclipse community a platform to collaborate, to promote cooperation among Eclipse projects, and to provide information to attendees about the Eclipse Foundation and its members. The Eclipse Foundation expects ESE to have a mixture of lectures covering Eclipse projects, consumer stories, and product demonstrations. The symposia is also an exciting event for the Eclipse ecosystem.
Eclipse Web Tools Platform 2.0 is available for immediate download and can also be installed as part of Europa. This major update delivers its key goals of improved quality, adopter readiness, harmony with other Eclipse projects, and many new features for end users. Eclipse developers will be particularly pleased with the debut of major features and specification updates to EJB3 JPA, JSP 2.0, JSF 1.2, Axis2 Web Services, server support, and source editing. We are pleased to announce a new conference for the Eclipse community, called OS Summit Asia. This new conference is being organized in collaboration with the Eclipse Foundation and the Apache Software Foundation. The inaugural event will be held Nov. 26-30, 2007 in Hong Kong and is expected to attract open source developers from across Asia.

Something we would like to accomplish during the Europa release is to make it easier for our user community to download Eclipse. The existing download model requires you to start with the SDK and then start adding projects and features. However, for the millions of Eclipse users the SDK is a bit of overkill, if you are really just are using Eclipse as a Java IDE. Or if you want to use Eclipse as a C/C++ IDE it is not that obvious what to download when you visit our download page.
The Eclipse Foundation is looking for members to speak at Eclipse Summit Europe. Prepared presentations should last approximately 60 minutes, including 5 minutes of questions from the audience at the end. Submitted talks should focus on 1 of 2 categories: 1) Consumer Stories; or 2) New & Noteworthy.
WTP 1.5.4 has been released to fix a number of bugs in the 1.5 release. Those with 1.5.3 or below already installed need only use Update Manager to "find updates for currently installed features". All-in-one zip files, SDKs, and minimal runtimes are also available from the download site as well as from member companies.

Additional keynote addresses will be delivered by Robert “r0ml� Lefkowitz, a noted enterprise architect and systems designer, and Dr. Herbert Thompson, an expert on application security and chief security strategist for Security Innovation.

The Bandit and Eclipse Higgins Projects today announced the achievement of a key milestone in the development of open source identity services. Based on working code from the two projects and the larger community of open source developers, the teams have created a reference application that showcases open source identity services that are interoperable with Microsoft’s Windows* CardSpace* identity management system and enable Liberty Alliance-based identity federation via Novell® Access Manager. This reference application is a first-of-its-kind open source identity system that features interoperability with leading platforms and protocols. This ground-breaking work will be demonstrated at the upcoming RSA Conference in San Francisco.

The Eclipse Foundation, an open source community committed to the implementation of a universal development platform, today announced the release of the Eclipse Data Tools Platform (DTP) 1.0, a collection of extensible frameworks and exemplary tools for developing data-centric applications in the Eclipse environment. With DTP 1.0, developers can now easily leverage existing data sources, such as enterprise databases, within the extensible Eclipse Platform. Data-related applications are growing in significance, so this release meets an important development requirement in the software industry.

The survey was responded to by over 600 people and although its not a truly scientific sample, it does provide some very good insights into the area of Eclipse training and education which should be useful to us all.
Thanks to all the people who contributed to the development of the survey, to the community members who participated, and especially to Donald Smith who supported the Working Group in using "Survey Monkey" to prepare questionnaire and analyze the results.

IBM is pleased to contribute translations for the Eclipse Project, the Eclipse Web Tools Platform (WTP) Project, the Eclipse Test and Performance Tools Platform (TPTP) Project, the Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools (BIRT) Project, the Eclipse Modeling Project, the Eclipse Data Tools Platform (DTP) Project and for several subprojects of the Eclipse Tools Project for the Callisto releases.
This AJDT release includes bug fixes and new features in the areas of binary weaving, refactoring and build automation, as well as incorporating the AspectJ 1.5.3 release, which itself includes numerous bug fixes, greatly reduced memory usage, and enhancements for load-time weaving and serviceability.

The Eclipse Foundation, an open source community committed to the implementation of a universal software development platform, today announced three milestone releases within the Eclipse Device Software Development Platform (DSDP). Founded in 2005 as a top-level Eclipse project, the mission of DSDP is to create an open, extensible, scalable and standards-based development platform to address the needs of the device software market.
Two new RCP webinars have been scheduled: 1) Building a Great GUI using Eclipse RCP is scheduled for November 21, and 2) Packaging and Deploying Applications based on Eclipse RCP is scheduled for December 14. These webinars are sponsored by Palamida, Instantiations, IBM and Eclipse Foundation.
Today, the Eclipse community celebrates five years as an open source project. Eclipse has grown from its roots as a Java IDE project to become a universal development platform for building and deploying software. There are now 66 open source projects at Eclipse, generating millions of downloads. It is estimated that more than 1,300 Eclipse based products are now available.

The deadline for tutorial submission is November 1, long talk submissions is December 15 and Short Talk and Demos is January 15. Right now we have a beta version of the home page that will be displayed on a random basis to about 25% of the home page visitors. We have also opened a bug to collect feedback. Please let us know what you like and dislike about the home page.
