Executive Report
I hope that you and yours are well and are enjoying these warm summer months.
The past few months have been incredibly busy and I would like to start by recognizing the dedication of the staff here at the Eclipse Foundation. We just recently had our annual all hands internal event and it was great to reconnect in person, and to welcome so many new colleagues to our team.
We recently announced the formation of two new and important working groups. The Open VSX Working Group is dedicated to supporting the evolution, operation, and sustainability of the Open VSX Registry, which provides a vendor-neutral repository of VS Code extensions for use by Eclipse Theia, vscodium, and others. With 2 million downloads a month, and support from Google, Huawei, Posit, Salesforce, Siemens, and STMicroelectronics Open VSX is clearly meeting an industry need.
We have also recently announced the formation of the Eclipse Cyber Risk Initiative, which I personally believe is one of the most important initiatives ever undertaken by the Eclipse Foundation. As we are all aware, cyber security and supply chain security are massive industry challenges. ECRI’s purpose is to ensure the security and integrity of Eclipse Foundation's community, projects, systems, and data by implementing the best practices and standards for software production, risk management and incident response. Our goal is to ensure that our community, projects, systems and data are protected against potential threats and vulnerabilities, and that we are able to respond promptly and effectively in the event of a security incident. This initiative needs the support of all of our members in order to be successful. Please subscribe to the ECRI mailing list to join the initiative, or to follow its progress.
Government regulation of the software industry is coming, and pending legislation in Europe such as the Cyber Resilience Act and the Product Liability Directive pose enormous risks to the open source community and ecosystem.
We will be holding an all members call next Thursday, July 13, at 14:30 CEST to provide an update on the challenges we face as a community and as an industry. We hope that you and your colleagues will be able to join us!
Membership and Budget Update
I’m pleased to report our membership remains strong. As of the end of May, our current corporate members now total 361, and our number of committers has grown to 1,966.
The Eclipse Foundation’s finances remain on target for 2023, as shown in the chart below. The 2023 budget approved by the Foundation’s board of directors and general assembly included significant growth for the Foundation as compared to 2022. You will notice that the budget includes an anticipated negative operating income for 2023; this was planned and coincides with the significant positive operating income from 2022 as we ramped up both our security and SDV initiatives over the past 12 months.
The Board approved a small revision to the 2023 budget for Eclipse Foundation AISBL in June, and as noted below in this newsletter, a meeting of the general assembly has been called for July 26, 2023 at which the General Assembly will be asked to approve the revised budget. I ask all voting members of the Belgian organization to please either attend or cast your vote in advance, as this is an important step in our governance operations. As a reminder, our reporting of all financial information is in Euros.

Extraordinary General Assembly: July 26, 2023
An extraordinary General Assembly of the Eclipse Foundation AISBL will be held via Zoom on July 26, 2023, starting at 9:00 AM EDT / 15:00 PM CEST. The meeting will also take place at the Eclipse Foundation's operating office, located at 2934 Baseline Road, Suite 202, Ottawa, ON, Canada. The primary purpose of the meeting is to enable the General Assembly to receive the report of the Foundation’s financial auditor for the 2022 financial year.
The official Convening Notice including the meeting agenda was previously sent to all members by email. Specific instructions regarding either attending or voting electronically in advance was sent to the member representatives of member organizations on July 6, 2023.
All members are encouraged to attend.
